Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists

ESKAS Alumni Survey 2023

On behalf of the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS aka ESKAS), a survey of all former Swiss Government Scholarship Holders between 2016-2021 and 1996-2015 is being conducted between mid-May and mid-June 2023. Various aspects of this survey are described below.

Background
In the past, you were awarded a Swiss Government Scholarship, also known as ESKAS-Stipendium (abbreviation in German for: Eidgenössische Stipendienkommission für ausländische Studierende) or bourse CFBE (abbreviation in French for: Commission fédérale des bourses pour étudiants étrangers).

Objectives
The members of the Federal Commission for Scholarships (FCS) would like to know:
• How did your career develop after your Swiss Government Scholarship?
• Where are you professionally active today?
• What were your experiences with the Swiss Government Scholarship?
• How do you maintain contact with colleagues and academic institutions in Switzerland?

About the survey
To get an overview of the situation, the FCS decided to launch a survey of all former scholarship holders between 1996 and 2021 at all Swiss academic institutions.

Importance
Your time devoted to this survey and your replies will be most appreciated. This survey will allow us to gather very useful information about career paths, mobility and networks of Swiss scholarship alumni worldwide. This is very important and precious information that will enable the FCS to further develop the scholarship programme.

Confidentiality
The answers will only be analysed anonymously and only the FCS will have access to the data. Rest assured that all persons involved in the survey will keep your personal data strictly confidential.

Mandate
The FCS has mandated "w hoch 2", a spin-off of the University of Bern to plan and conduct the survey and analyse its results. Of course, all participants will receive a summary of the results once they are available.

Results
The main findings are published here:
Summary in English and in French
Presentation with main findings
• Report "Career-boosting scholarships" (10.7MB) (Summaries in English and French included).
Interview with Dr. David Weibel about the main findings

ESKAS Alumni Survey 2016

On behalf of the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS aka ESKAS), a survey of all former Swiss Government Scholarship Holders between 1996-2015 has being conducted between mid-November and mid-December 2016.

• Where are you professionally active today?
• What were your experiences with the Swiss Government Scholarship?
• How do you maintain contact with colleagues and academic institutions in Switzerland?

About the survey
To get an overview of the situation, the FCS decided to launch a survey of all former scholarship holders between 1996 and 2015 at all Swiss academic institutions. For the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, a very similar survey was conducted and published two years ago (Brain drain or brain circulation? Career paths of international students, 2014 ). Since we have access to the anonymous results of the previously conducted survey, they will be included in our analysis of the upcoming FCS survey. This is why the Zurich alumni 1996-2012 will not be addressed again in our survey.

Importance
Over the past 20 years, no other similar survey has been conducted of Swiss Government scholarship alumni. Therefore your time devoted to this survey and your replies will be most appreciated.

Of course, all participants will receive a summary of the results once they are available 2017.

Results
The main findings are published here:
